Mary Maxwell Gates
President of the Junior League in 1966 and for 18 years on the board of Regents of the University of Washington, Mary Gates became the first woman Chair of the King County Board of Directors of United Way as well as being on the Board and Executive committee of the U W of America. Other charitable endeavors included the YWCA, Leadership Tomorrow, Seattle Children's home, and Chair of the Children's Hospital Board of Trustees. She, her husband William Gates, JR. , son Bill III, Founder of Microsoft, Corp, and two daughters, Kristi and Libby were honored in 1991 as Philanthropic Family of the Year by Washington Gives.
